IBJJF Worlds 2016 Match Highlights with Buchecha, Mendes, Miyao and More
The Walter Pyramid. Long Beach, California. June 5th, 2016. The IBJJF World Championships gi mats are set, and some of the most recognizable names in the sport are walking in right now.
Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida comes through the crowd first, Hayabusa patches across his white gi, head down, moving with purpose. Erberth Santos follows in blue. Then it's Edwin Najmi in profile, Keenan Cornelius bowing at the mat entrance, Rafael Mendes in his RVCA whites, Rafael Lovato Jr. looking straight up at the arena lights, and a Miyao stepping past the yellow barricades with a black belt tied clean around his waist. Dominyka Obelenyte's already outside the barriers doing vertical jumps. She's not waiting for anyone.
GFTeam head coach Julio Cesar Pereira stands at the mat edge. He claps once. Then both hands go straight to his head, and he holds them there. He knows exactly what's coming.
These athletes didn't travel to Long Beach to watch. Who holds it together when the gi mats get heavy? Who's walking out of this arena as IBJJF World Champion?
