Rorion Gracie takes the mat with Royce in this Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Basics Vol. 1 instructional, and the first problem he tackles is distance. Against a bigger, stronger opponent, you don't stand toe to toe. You kick to close the gap, deflect the punch, and wrap into the clinch before they can hurt you.

From the clinch, the takedowns stack up. Hip throw, back-step trip, wrist hold and bend. Each one puts the opponent on the ground and Rorion on top in the mounted position. That's the goal - every time, no exceptions.

But Rorion flips the script. Now Royce is on the bottom, stuck under the mount. Two escapes: the trap and roll - arm pinned to the chest, foot locked, hips exploding straight up - and the elbow escape when the opponent spreads wide and won't let you catch his foot.
