Ralph Gracie Teaches Lapel Choke and Back Choke Counters in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Ralph Gracie, the 1993 Brazilian Vale Tudo champion, is back on the mat for Vol. 3 of his instructional series - chokes and counters, gi and no-gi. Lloyd Irvin, Dave Womack, and Jeff Ruth are in the room, taking the techniques so Gracie can show every step.
Back choke defense comes first. Hooks are in, the neck is open, and Gracie shows exactly how to shut it down. He drills the grip, the body shift, the weight transfer - same reps, over and over, until the mechanics stick.
Then comes the lapel choke. One hand in, two hands in, and the pressure is already building. Gracie shows the counter window. It's there. But it's small, and it closes fast.
The Nakonda choke, blood choke, and guillotine defense all follow. Does the escape work before the position seals completely? Or is there a moment where surviving is the only option left?
