Derrick Lewis Shows How to Stand Up from Bottom Position

Derrick Lewis finds himself on his back against Roy Nelson, a legitimate BJJ black belt with serious top pressure. Most fighters would work guard, hunt for sweeps, or tie up their opponent's posture. Lewis has a different plan. He frames his hands against Nelson's hips, creates space with explosive hip movement, and suddenly he's standing.

The pattern repeats across multiple opponents. Guard position turns into technical standup. Side control becomes a hip escape and base recovery. An americana attempt gets countered with a roll to turtle, then straight back to feet. Every time someone tries to hold him down, Lewis uses the same fundamental movements to get vertical again.

Nelson throws knees when Lewis turtles, trying to discourage the escape. Doesn't matter. Lewis accepts the punishment, establishes his posting hand, switches his hips, and rises. The techniques look simple but the timing and base are precise. Frame, create space, post your hand, switch your hips, stand.

Can pure technique overcome size and strength when someone really commits to holding you down? Does Lewis's purple belt skill level actually translate against higher ranked grapplers who know what's coming?
